Aspen History
The history of the area says that in 1879 large deposits of silver were discovered here, after which Aspen came out on top in the country in its production. It got its name due to the abundance of one of the species of aspen – Aspen. The city prospered during the 1880s, the first ten years of its existence.
The Jerome Grand Hotel Aspen
New hotels and restaurants opened, shops and trading shops appeared. Elements of elitism began to appear in the city. In 1889, the first attribute of a luxurious life appeared in Aspen: the Jerome Grand Hotel, equipped with hydraulic elevators – the latest achievement in technology at that time. In addition, the Jerome Hotel is the first building in the Wild West to be lit by electricity. Since then, the elevator and wiring have been replaced, but in all other respects Jerome keeps to the old days: red brick, hunting trophies on the walls and other retro things, assuring that both 19th-century gold miners and 60s Hollywood stars sat here.
Aspen Mountain Ski Resort
After the depletion of silver reserves, since 1936 the city began to develop as a ski area. Today Aspen is the most prestigious and fashionable ski resort in the USA. In 1950, the Aspen ski slopes hosted the Alpine Skiing World Championships. Modern Aspen is the city with the most expensive real estate in the States, the center of attraction for Hollywood stars and European billionaires. Despite the big name, the resort city is open to everyone!
Why Aspen?
- First, Aspen is a year-round resort. From November to April, the mountain peaks are covered with a layer of the famous “champagne” powder, which is found only in the French province of Champagne. Here you can practice almost all winter sports: downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowshoeing, and dog sledding. During the rest of the year, the resort offers golf and tennis, hot air ballooning, rafting, horseback riding, cycling, hiking and parasailing.
- In your free time from outdoor activities, you can spend in a museum, art gallery, cinema or theater, walk along shady alleys or taste
- American and European cuisine in one of the many cafes and restaurants. There are over a hundred of them here. The history of Aspen can be learned at the Wheeler-Stallard House Museum, built in 1888 in the Victorian style. For lovers of shopping, expensive and not very expensive boutiques are open.
- Aspen is a very beautiful resort town located in the picturesque Roaring Fork valley among majestic rocks and mountains. It has a special charm with hints of the Victorian era, and the atmosphere of the city itself is filled with the spirit of American Westerns.

Things to do in Aspen
Many tourists are also attracted to Aspen by the annual festivals and carnivals, such as the Jazz Festival, Western Days, Horse Riding Festival, etc. The International Music Festival of Classical Music has been held here since 1949 and presents performances by world famous musicians. The annual Filmfest brings together many of the world’s film stars.
